Scientific Name Notes Van Beneden (1849) (cit. 471; pg. 191) has traditionally been cited as the author of the name Acanthobothrium n. gen.. In that work, which lacks a description, he refers to Bothriocephalus bifurcatus. In 1850 (cit. 470; pg. 278) Van Beneden treats 5 species (not including A. bifurcatus) under the heading Acanthobothrium, listing A. coronatum first. However, Machado & Marques (cit. 5983) make a convincing case for the authorship of this genus to be attributed to Blanchard (1848). In which case, authorship of the type species would be Acanthobothrium coronatum (Rudolphi, 1819) Blanchard, 1848. Van Beneden (1850; cit. 470) is provided as the redescription here for clarification. Later in 1850 (cit. 472 pg. 129) Van Beneden treated species of Acanthobothrium.
