| Scientific Name Notes | Van Beneden (1850; cit 470; pg. 277) was first to use the name "E. variabilis" but no diagnosis or figures were presented. Later that year, Van Beneden (1850; cit 472; pg. 117) presented a complete description of this species, accompanied by figures. We consider cit 472 to be the first valid use of this name. This species was designated the type of the genus by Braun (1900). |

PLATE III. FIGURES 1-15. Echeneibothrium variabile n. sp. 1. Strobila adulte, grossi, montrant les quatre Bothridies sous un aspect différent, et le bulbe (rostellum) ouvert en avant. 2. Tête du Scolex comprimée sous une lame de verre; on voit les canaux longitudinaux dans l’intérieur, la couche musculaire feutrée et le bulbe ouvert au milieu. 3. Autre aspect de la tête d’un Scolex mort. 4. Encore un autre aspect; cette tête est surtout remarquable par le grand développement du bulbe aux dépens des Bothridies; c’est l’inverse de la fig. 3. Ce bulbe est largement ouvert en avant. 5. Scolex isolé, complet et adulte. 6. Bothridie vue de face. 7. Bothridie comprimée entre deux lames de verre. 8. Bothridie infiltrée, vue de profil. 9-12. Même organe sous différents aspects. 13. Le mode de terminaison des canaux longitudinaux en avant dans les Bothridies. 14. Proglottis adulte; le trait à côté indique le grandeur naturelle. 15. OEufs.
