Scientific Name Notes The taxonomic history of this taxon is summarized in Jensen (2005). In short, Hiwar et al. (1993) attribute the erection of the genus (as “Sephenicephallum” or “Sephenicphallum” in their text) to house their new species “Sephenicephallum maharashtrii Shinde et al. 1982”to “Shinde et al. (1982)” in the abstract and “Shinde et al. (1980)” in the discussion. In the references, said publication is cited as “SHINDE, G.B., SARWADE, D.V. AND JADHAV, B.V. 1980. On a new species of the genus Sephenicephallum Gen. et sp. nov. from Trygon sephen., Marath. Univ. J. Sci.” Extensive literature searches indicate that this paper was never published. The genus name Sephenicephallum (or Sephenicephalum) and species name Sephenicephallum maharashtrii (or Sephenicephalum maharashtrii) are thus considered to be nomina nuda, unavailable for nomenclatural purposes.
